If you are TIRED of paying $5+ for a single loaf of bread, today at Whole Homemaking we are showing you how to make bread to save money in your own kitchen. With five ingredients and about 15 minutes of hands-on time, you can make cheap homemade bread that works out to about $0.50 per loaf.

I get really discouraged and frustrated sometimes when I’m walking through the grocery store and trying to save money on groceries. 2024 has so far seen all-time high inflation numbers and they do not show any signs of slowing down. Bread is an essential part of the North American diet, and the smell of homemade bread, as well as the thought and effort that go into making homemade bread (even if it’s cheap homemade bread), make all the difference for a family. A lot of people think that in order to learn how to make bread to save money, you have to spend hours in the kitchen or take several culinary courses. This could not be further from the truth. Breadmaking is an art, and like any art, it can be started and achieved today, and worked on and perfected for years.

This recipe makes two loaves, which more or less should feed two people bread for the week. This easy, cheap homemade bread recipe would be easy to double to triple to make more for a bigger family.

RECIPE

In a large bowl, mix 2 TBSPs of instant yeast with 2 cups of warm water. Let the yeast dissolve for a few minutes. To the bowl, add 2 TBSPs of any kind of oil, 3 TBSPs of sugar, 1 TSP of salt, and 2 C of flour. Mix until the substance is goopy.

Add 3-4 more cups of flour one at a time and mix after each one. When the dough is stiff enough that you can’t mix it with a spoon, turn it out on a floured surface and start kneading (the drier your environment is, the less flour you’ll need).

Knead dough for 8-10 mins. Cut the dough in half and roughly shape and put into parchment paper lined pans. Let the dough rise for about an hour, til doubled.

Bake bread for 30-35 minutes at 350 degrees until golden brown on the top and bottom, and knocking on the bread makes a hollow sound.

Cool and brush with butter on top if you want.
