Grocery stores are expensive. It’s all too easy to go in for a couple of items, only to leave with an empty wallet. Since we all have to eat, there’s really no way around this — despite the high costs, buying groceries and making homemade meals is still the cheapest, smartest way to get fed.

We have good news, sort of: Chances are, we’re throwing down way more money than we should. While it’d be hard to cut grocery spending in half, there are many tricks to avoid over-spending at the supermarket — 20 of them, in fact. Using them all together might add up to big savings. (Bonus: many of them make for more sustainable food choices, too.)

Runs With Knives says:

Go to Aldi if you have one near you, their prices are almost always lower than anyone else. Always use the price per unit on the pricing labels to tell which is the better deal. Get a membership to Costco or other warehouse club to buy your bulk meats and other items such as laundry detergent…etc.

Brenda Drew says:

Make your own salad dressings with olive or coconut oil, lemon juice, herbs and spices. You can even make ones with lime or orange juice…get creative and save money! Even though Paul Newman ones are great, you can make them just as well at home! Mix your own favorite mustard with raw honey which has more essential nutrients than regular honey and add some oil to it! Also plain old ketchup and mayo is French dressing…use organic ketchup and a mayo like Smart Balance and you have a healthier version, add some green relish to that and you have your own Thousand Island dressing! Also, make your own applesauce….may take a bit more work peeling those apples and slicing them, but it makes way better tasting applesauce which you can add some cinnamon to as well as your own sweetener. Make your own soups as well cuts down in grocery bills and isn't that hard to make and tastes way better than canned soups….get a slow cooker and your meals/soups are ready by the time you're ready for dinner! Good luck peeps!

Aldi is a good place for better prices too if there is one in your area and food cooperatives are a great resource also

Backyard Homestead says:

Nice tips. I especially believe in the shopping on the weekend tip. You need to go when you have time to compare all the prices. If I go after work at night, I am a lot more likely to just grab something rather than closely comparing the prices. Thanks!!

Dora Thompson says:

Check to see if your stores have a discount or "salvage" outlet. Ours also has the commercial items like #10 cans of vegetables and fruits, as well has cups and utensils

Joseph Gamez says:

Great tips!

Elisa Todd says:

coupons are great, but where can I find them?

contreeman says:

MY LOCAL GROCERY STORE HAS A DISCOUNT BUGGY FOR PRODUCE IT IS ALWAYS MY FIRST STOP. 1$ FOR CAULIFLOWER VS 3$ OF THE ONES THAT ARE NOT MARKED DOWN I CAN ALWAYS CUT OFF A BLEMISH.

stripymccatpuss says:

Look at the "marked down" section, stuff coming up to its eat by/use by date/slightly damaged packaging, plenty of bargins there, especialy if you go to the shop an hour before they close, they sell fresh produce at stupid cheap prices ( 80-90% off) as they know they have to bin it if it is not sold.

King Brian of knocknasheega says:

Pay a professional shoplifter to steal you your shopping list, they sell them at half price. It may sound crude but what the heck the big company's have no morals why should we?

cokeman250 says:

Shop the clearance sections every store has them. Also do your homework and look through the store sales ads before you go shopping proper planing saves lots of money. Alot of the times 3 stores will have the exact same item for different prices. You can also cherry pick and that means when a store has a super deal on 1 or 2 items just go and buy those items and nothing more a lot of higher priced stores do this to get shopper in the store and they will make it up on other items that are typically higher priced the the other stores in town. God Bless buddy
