Travelers are set to receive NT$800 in vouchers as part of the central government’s bailout package for COVID-19. The Executive Yuan is expected to finalize the voucher program on Thursday. Here’s what we know so far. The Executive Yuan plans to issue “economic stimulus vouchers” with a budget of NT$2 billion. They won’t be coupons offering discounts, but vouchers that can be spent without a minimum purchase amount. Distributed exclusively at hotels around Taiwan, these vouchers will be redeemable at shopping districts, night markets, and restaurants, as well as for culture and arts events. Each voucher will be worth NT$200, and each person is entitled to four.Voice of Wang Pin-hsunHotel marketing managerThe cash value is relatively low. I think that could be pushed up to stimulate spending. I think previous cash voucher schemes were better.Vendors hope that the vouchers will be available before Tomb-Sweeping Festival in early April.Voice of Wang Pin-hsunHotel marketing managerIn March, many hotels are already in the low season. If the government distributes the vouchers a little earlier, that would stimulate the people’s willingness to travel and to spend.Shen Jong-chinMinister of economic affairsWe’re looking at a few basic principles with this voucher program. First, it will launch only after the epidemic is contained. If people go around spending before the end of the epidemic, they could throw the epidemic situation into chaos.Economics Minister Shen Jong-chin said that vouchers would be distributed only after the end of the epidemic. He said the program would be focused on stimulating out-of-town spending to revitalize the tourism sector. Cheng Li-chiunMinister of cultureRight now, epidemic prevention is most important. But we have still proposed a budget to stimulate arts and culture. I think that these short-term measures will be very important for the arts and culture sector. The Executive Yuan is expected to finalize the plan on Thursday, with vouchers to go out after the epidemic is over. Travel and tourism businesses say that their industry is struggling and in dire need of more immediate support.
