I attended a private prep school and private university and I teach in a public school. The notion that private schools have it tough and we need to help them compete with public schools is asinine. Private schools select the students they want and they expel whomever they dislike unceremoniously. Public schools have to take everyone. Public schools have overloaded classrooms and caseloads. There is no competition, only a desire for more privilege and more religious indoctrination.

This is an ongoing battle in my state. This is an attempt to destroy public education, plain and simple. The right understands the education system molds the next generation, and not being in control of this terrifies them. I would urge anyone thinking this is a good idea to look at what has actually happened in every state that adopted it. You are spot on about the actual effects of vouchers David. Choice is a red herring. The supporters that are pushing this idea believe that education is a money making proposition where they can shape the kind of society they want to keep them in power. By "them" I mean the republican, christian leaders. We, as a nation, have taken that view about healthcare. It works well for people with money, if you are poor it has consequences that can cost you everything you may have. It also yielded a system that was unable to respond quickly to the challenges of a global pandemic, with the government having to step in and bankroll the response. To turn around and do this to our educational system is unconscionable.
