My folks used to donate to a food bank, and they would bring me stuff that they couldn't give away. They once brought me 5 lbs of basil. I had pesto for like 8 years!

Angela Cahill says:

Good to know. Pretty sure the food banks here in N TX are strained, but who knows for sure. I've been debating about going to a food bank myself but haven't yet. Maybe I will now.

rosey says:

This is absolutely true. I help with a couple food places and the people go for the easy cheap stuff. Your right thry dont know what to do with the more expensive items because they have never had them. Lots goes to waste. There has been many days where we have to post things on facebook for people to come get because it will go in the trash.

Chasity H. says:

My local food bank only allows you to visit once every three months.

Becky Cox says:

I work for a major grocer on the manufacturing side. We had 10 pallets of potato chips delivered to us because the food bank turned down the donation. We got full cases of chips

It isn't that easy in Utah. You have to be disabled or homebound along with being below the poverty level. AND if not any of the above…you have to be referred by a doctor, organization, etc.

We definitely don’t want food to go to waste. There are people hurting financially already.

Carla says:

My friend gave me some food she got from a food bank. The mac n cheese had little black bugs in them.

Under the Median says:

Yep. We helped at our church food bank for ten years. They now have a lot of leftovers every month. So, rather than waste it, the food bank director puts it on a pew at the back of the sanctuary and asks each family from the church to please take some items home with them so she doesn't have to throw them out.

Introvert Cat says:

I’m gonna look for a food bank near me. Honestly I tried before but it’s hard to identify them and the schedules didn’t match with my work schedule. And of course the feeling of shame or they would judge me because I’m not poor. But food is expensive and I don’t qualify for snap benefits because I work. Thanks for the info! I don’t even need beef..if I could just get a bunch of chicken and ground turkey I would be happy πŸ˜ƒ

GORGON says:

Wish stores would lower their price 50% or more instead of dumping them

Carolyn Waters says:

People can go to the food bank and give it to people that needs it and can’t get there. God bless

Scott Penland says:

Kroeger has plenty of grade B repacked eggs if you ask. 1 broken in carton so they pull the carton. Used to put them out but now they don't have assigned space so you have to ask. I ask local dairy gal and she asks how many dozen I want. High dollar Blue and brown eggs. They too get so many they end up putting them in compost bin. I've bought them for years long before eggflation.

James Whittington says:

There is no food bank here that I know of. There is a soup kitchen but it's only open at certain times and is truly for the needy.

Pick Like A Pro says:

I can’t eat that crap food anymore and can’t afford these expensive groceries so I eat once a day whatever my wife makes for dinner because she doesn’t make all that crap. It’s crazy that they throw this stuff away rather than making it affordable.

Bonnie Upton says:

I sure don't get great stuff from our pantrys

Deanna DeBondt says:

This is NOT happening in our area, and this past year our Church Food Pantry has been bare every two weeks.
Our Church is one of the larger Catholic Churches in town and located a block from downtown.
Our Pantry is 95% stocked by parishioners.
Public elementary schools in the area bring in their excess of juice boxes, fruit and pudding cups they would otherwise throwout on Mondays, when we feed the homeless and day old bread from a parishioner's bakery, but thecrest is donations from parishioner.
Just yesterday, I ran into our Pastor,as we were dropping off canned protein, and he was so grateful, sharing parishioners are now struggling to keep food on their tables, started visited the food pantry.
Not sure where Costco, Vons and Albertsons are donating around here.

Uncle Benny says:

Yep! 100%… my stupid efforts at helping the helpless made me understand why there is so much waste and so many people in need… they simply don't want help… they want a servant to play a specific role in their little theatre of life gone wrong… I'm willing to do that, to a point…

Hey Kiddo! says:

This is not the case here in Arkansas. You barely get anything.

Jessie Schultz says:

I’m sure most people feel others need it more but don’t hesitate to go to help stretch your budget.
Besides you would accept in a min if you got it for free at the store.😊
