Why are you spending it all at once? I would time out my groceries since produce quickly expires and rot. It is best to go once per week if you can.

George Pope says:

ok, subtract $60 Costco membership from your first month's food budget. . .

ozwalled says:

Eat mostly rice and lentils, and you can take it WAY lower.

It's also worth noting that the prices on a lot of items at costco (not all, of course) are significantly higher than at some other stores, so try to have an idea of what prices are elsewhere before buying there, or you can really waste a lot of dollars unnecessarily.

And you should be able to find potatoes somewhere for about half that price, and maybe even better if you get them on a good sale and/or in a larger bag.

And don't forget to look over the discount racks at grocery stores if they have one — they usually consist of stuff that's set to expire soon or is at the early stages of starting to look bad, for stuff like produce), but if you eat 'em right away or freeze 'em, you'll can end up saving to coin there as well.

You definitley should have spent more of your budget at no frills! No frills has excellent deals and I always find that Costco causes you to spend too much money on things that won't last, that you will probably end up throwing away.

I'm a huge critic but here's some advice on this. I went through the university life as a poor student. I can tell you I learned a lot of the flaws of budgeting and only budgeting. Lacked proper meats myself and ended up with B12 deficiency. I wouldn't really recommend Costco to people for food. It's got a policy towards their memberships to shop there. In regards other then No Frills I'd check out Food Basics and asides Costco you might find other Bulk type grocery stores. If you're lucky enough to find one well buying in Bulk is generally cheaper as long as you use all of it before it goes bad. Also I'd suggest checking the grocery store for deals before shopping by finding your grocery stores online first and make a list and stick to it. Easier to budget if you got a list and calculated cost before buying. If you're able to manage waiting and have some flexibility of when you buy your food wait a week if there is no sale that week. You'll general get sales every couple of weeks. Try to restrict yourself from too much snacking as well and make sure you follow a proper food guide on what your servings should be or you could end up really deficient in some of your foods. (By the way you might offend people who are vegetarian by having some laughing thing over it even though the diet is unhealthy and they tend to have the highest risk of B12 deficiency of a vitamin that only comes from meats and could kill you without having an intake of it. Essentially it only comes from meats and you need it to produce red blood cells and keep your brain and body functioning. Soy beans are actually not as healthy as people think since most beans are actually a bit toxic for us and still don't provide iron. Sure some are fortified but they generally don't provide enough in a serving. If they're worried of eating unhealthier meats fish and chicken are good sources but i assume a lot of it is ethical reasons more then our natural diets requiring it for vegetarians not eating meat.)

Anyways what seemed to lack the most in your foods was dairy which is actually still important to your diet. Aka milk as an example would increase your intake of calcium especially if you had multigrain cereals with it. Eggs aren't actually as bad as people once thought but they sure wouldn't be good for you everyday. In regards your issue isn't just budgeting it's eating healthy. I'd even recommend cutting the bacon and sausages and junk foods. If you really want to make something like that make something like homemade jerky (not store bought as it generally has too much sodium) All you need is a dehydrator and whatever healthy meat you want for snacking. You could also use the dehydrator to make dried fruit if you want. Add some nuts and unsweetened dark chocolate (dark chocolate is actually really healthy as well as almonds that both help with metabolism) and you got a healthy trail mix. A dehydrator can make some healthier snacks Even seen jerky made from fish with a dehydrator. Just saying you can make some healthy choices while budgeting. I wish I didn't just budget when I was younger as I ended up dealing with some of those health problems later due to it. Not eating healthy is a good way to kill yourself early so don't go too crazy with bad food to try to deal with a poor budget. Get a few ideas to keep it healthy. you'll feel better for it in the end. Also keep in mind food doesn't actually last more then 3-4 days and you may want food that could last for that long with leftovers.

PS: If you really want to know about 13 years back $20 from Food Basics would have filled your cart. Got to blame inflation from increasing minimum wage. It's effected lots even though workers think they're getting more. LoL. Essentially it made it hard on small businesses to afford employees and in general increased costs in products for that reason as well as because workers were making more and more which they were able to afford less and less and less small businesses could keep running with it.. With the virus they've also increased costs on food that it effects middle class workers even as they state they can't have an overabundance of workers and that includes people working in foods. Should have gotten more relaxed but now we got Delta to deal with.

Love this guy’s dedication and tenacity! He is creative and fun. It’s not really a practical video because it cannot be maintained for more than one month – the nutrition needs to be better balanced for long-term health – and things like Costco membership is not counted. He starts by saying he will showcase the lowest grocery stores but Costco is really the only one fully featured. But he’s sharing his experience which is appreciated.
