In this video we challenged ourselves to buy food from a discount grocery store and then drive across the street to the “fancy” grocery and see how much we saved. The results were surprising! Making the small decision to shop at the discount grocery store makes a HUGE difference in our finances. Watch the video to see how much we actually save!

We’ve always been big advocates of saving money on food by shopping at Aldi. We always knew we saved tons of money by shopping there, but we never really realized how much! We’ve never been ones to count pennies or cut coupons, we just made the conscious decision to shop at the discount grocery store.

We ended up saving $43 in one trip. After multiplying the savings out by our food budget we determined that this saves us over $5000/year!

Pride is what keeps most people shopping at the retail grocery store. Aldi isn’t as pretty, but you are really paying for all that marketing! If financial independence is something you are trying to accomplish, we absolutely recommend shopping at your local discount grocery store. Making this small decision will help you arrive at your F.I.R.E. goal much faster!

So…how to save money on food? The answer is VERY simple…shop at discount grocery!

My issue shopping at Aldi is I never have a quarter in my purse for the cart!!

nauta2527 says:

Weirdddd I know exactly where that Aldi is at 👀 I used to live right down the road from there!

Ann L says:

You have very nice clothes. Are those discounted as well? If you are finding clothing and footwear deals, where do you go to shop?

Elise Schaecher says:

We pretty much only shop Aldi and Costco! Still spend a ton on groceries 😅, but I am sure we would spend way more if we went to the pretty stores!

Shari Burns says:

Every month I seem to add a new item to my Aldis list. I love those Tostito chips you mentioned, their fruit, bagged lettuce, English muffins, Thin Wheats crackers, packages of sliced cheese, jar of coconut oil, and their wine is great too. They also have great chocolate and for holidays I usually buy a frozen Butterball turkey there at a fantastic price.

sheshr says:

The walmart nearest me has raised their prices on most foods so much that their prices are higher than Giant or Safeway on sale. There are no sales at Walmart. I just discovered Aldi just over a year ago and they undercut everyone else by a lot. I go to Aldi all the time now, even though I don't need to financially. Why pay more for things like bread, cheese, Almond milk, etc., all of which are a fraction of other stores?

Benjamin K. Woodcock says:

My wife "showed me the way" with Aldi and we shop there for most of the basics. We don't budge on a few name brand items that do taste different than the Aldi brand. Thanks for pulling back the curtain for others!

Gratefully Healing Artivist says:

Don't forget Food 4 Less. 🙂 Although I personally prefer ALDI.

Natalie McDaniel says:

I love aldi and their ingredients to most food is a lot cleaner. We eat vegan too so I love the price of veggies and fruit!

Arlette Dumais says:

Omg, Aldi is the best kept secret when you want to create a fabulous and impressive charcuterie board. Great selection of imported cheeses, prosciutto, salami, cured olives, etc. And they come in small packages so there is minimal waste. Easily costs double at other stores!

Melody Anderson says:

We don’t have an Aldi near me in the SF Bay area but we do have Grocery Outlets which I hear are very similarly to Aldi. I swear by these guys…excellent prices!

Samantha Klesaris says:

I love Aldi!! We have a few around where I am in Massachusetts, I went to one in Germany when I was there a year ago same exact store place is awesome !

Havaseet2 says:

I used to shop at Walmart until they put an ALDI in a block away. The food quality is very good, better and cheaper than Walmart. The store is cleaner and quicker checkout lanes. Everything is designed for efficiency passing the savings on to the customer.

MacLeod's FREEmery says:

Hahahaha "bamboozled"! ❤lol

Rachel Casto says:

Thanks for the video! I am from Arizona and just got an Aldi close to me. I will have to try it out!

Beth the reading wife says:

Having you return the cart not only saves on labor cost but also the insurance that the store has to carry.

Michelle says:

Do you purchase meat from Aldi? I love salmon from Aldi.

Michelle says:

Aldi is amazing!!!

Amy Everhart says:

I've recently fallen in love with Aldi! Best price on organic eggs too.

B B says:

That's wild! Growing up Aldi's was the expensive place by where I lived. We would go to a store called White's in Howard city. Most of the food was close or past expiration date but it was almost all under $1. It sounds unappealing but I came from a very poor house so we didn't have any other options. They also had boxes of things that they couldn't sell for families like ours to have for free. I was so gutted when they closed

T Lew says:

In Oregon it’s Grocery Outlet and Winco ( employee owned). Example: Wheat Thins at Ray’s $4.99, at Winco $1.85🤯
