intel cost £200 more. Spend that on extra on GPU and it will be a lot faster the Intel system.

Hi, thanks for the video and I hope you are doing well! I am a huge fan of yours as I just recently built my first PC this past holiday season and have added components over time since then for both performance upgrades and just to learn more about computers. I have a 1080 Ti SC2 by EVGA that I adore as much as Gollum does The One Ring to rule them all. I presently have an I7-7700K and am going to be getting into VR gaming and then 4k gaming once the monitors improve in pricing (especially G-Sync ones, grrr). This is my first PC that I built and I had terrible luck with a broken Corsair H100i V2 that broke and caused me a lot of stress, anxiety, and confusion as a first time builder. I'm sure you can relate.
Now to my primary question: will my i7-7700K and 1080 TI combo perform admirably and without disappointment with VR and 4k gaming as the CPU was practically top of the line for gaming when I bought it. I can't overclock heavily because I'm using a Hyper 212 Evo (as I didn't need liquid cooling until now and was very disappointed to have a broken water cooler on my first build over the holidays) with two corsair SP120s (green lighting of course) to cool the heat sink.
I noticed in your video you mentioned the significance of a 5.0Ghz OC on the i7-8700K when playing VR games and I am looking for a smooth VR experience. Would you recommend I get a better cooler so I can overclock my I7-7700K to 5.0GHz (or even higher if I won the silicon lottery) to have a better experience with VR? My dad is not a gamer and unfortunately experiences vertigo at times but would totally like to try VR games with me and it would mean a lot to the both of us to have him be able enjoy gaming as I have and it would be a bonding experience. As I am writing this, it has brought to mind another question and that is if I will even need a better CPU to have an excellent VR experience? I hope that is not the case because that means I'd have to upgrade to a new MOBO too because of Intel's desire to be a pain in the ass in exchange for money, which I can understand but it gets old. I digress…
I apologize for the long post and would be immensely grateful for any feedback, suggestions, and help regarding my situation. The plan is to have VR up and running by Thanksgiving. I have yet to decide on a headset yet either and am interested in anyone's opinions on them as well as great cooling options for my situation. If it makes a difference, I pretty much just play games on Steam (I have way to many because of those sales) and Blizzard games although I have retired from WoW.

I am always looking for feedback as I am obsessed with optimization and love my first enthusiast built PC. I will always be hungry for more though. My friends make fun of me when I try some new tweaks or hardware and my PC is out of commission for the weekend but even though it can be (and usually is) frustrating I absolutely love learning about PCs and screwing things up is the best way to learn and remember what not to do. Long live the raid card that collects dust on my shelf….

Should really be doing a comparison of the i5 8600k since it is the same price as the Ryzen 1700. both are around $299. And Ryzen 1700 also gives a nice, usable stock cooler.

I just finished my new R7 1700X system, and I have to be honest. I didn't see as much performance increase over my FX-8370 as I expected. It is currently OC'ed to 3.7 on all cores, but I will go higher on my Kraken X62. Yes, there is a VERY noticeable difference, but not as much as I expected for the money that I put into the system. But, I mainly play Minecraft with a tiny bit of AAA games thrown in (:shrugs: I just love MC), so your mileage will vary. I went AMD because of the promise that they made about supporting AM4 up to 2020. I DID seriously consider the i7 8700K, and I almost went with it, but the 2020 support swayed me.
Either of these platforms would make a great system. But no matter which one you go with, buy a premium motherboard. It is worth the extra money to get all the upgrades that a premium board brings to the table. Just my 2 cents.
I think this analysis fails because you aren't looking at total cost of ownership. AM4 will have 12nm parts next year and 7nm parts in 18 -24 months. The intel alternative will likely require a motherboard upgrade…

i have no problem with ryzen & sli or my high speed memory,cpu r7 1700 ax370 k7 gigabyte now con-lake on the other hand refresh of skylake you cant buy them
With the Intel coffee mug, I was totally expecting a fan boy whammy. Didn't happen. I like this guy. Benchmark heaven.
and, currently, if you want the best of the best for pro editing workstation, go with 1950x, also a biggie to keep in mind is that intel kills their boards so quickly. I appreciate your review however.
im about to build a brand new pc and im having trouble deciding between the 8700k and 1700x — im a full time graphic designer and i rarely game (i only run low-graphics strategy games anyways so it really doesnt matter). i spend ~75% of my time at the computer between chrome, adobe suite (primarily photoshop, illustrator, and lightroom), and the file manager. the rest of the time is games, movies/tv, and just looking at the desktop/listening to music.
im looking for compatibility as well… so what do you guys think? i basically just want something around 300-400 bucks with at least 6 cores that will be reasonably efficient and wont run too hot.
