In truth, the coupons really are worth this and if you wanted, you could redeem them for their cash value. Of course, you’d need a large quantity of them to even reach a penny’s worth. This goes up even more if you’re interested in making a profit as you’ll often need to mail the coupons in to redeem the value, depending on the company issuing the coupon.

MAN! I at one point had a whole bunch of blue chip stamps. I wonder how much Warren buffet had to do with killing it. He got a majority interest around 1979, and around 1980 the sales PLUMMETED! In 2006 the profit was about 0.13%of what it was in 1980, NOT ACCOUNTING FOR INFLATION! So if ONE person owned it, and he took all the money that year, he STILL wouldn't have a middle class income. It would be only about 50% more than minimum wage!

Anyway, I do remember that I got a real nice crystal radio set. I was only a little kid, but it was a kit that ended up looking like a radio set you might buy at the store, was ludicrously simple, brought in plenty of stations and, though it was electric, didnt even require a battery. Outside of them, I don't know anyone that carried such a device. Supposedly they used to make them, but I guess people just wanted the higher power transistor battery radios.

The brady bunch even had an episode that, today might seem surreal. They went into a store, like those that existed, and simply traded the books for I believe it was a row boat. And inflation was lower back then, and frankly gas was more expensive, so a difference of a few pennies wasn't that big a deal. Today the economies are just NUTS! I read a few days ago about an up and coming department and this guy said he started when there were 19 people there. It grew to 25. It advertises ALL OVER! They have ads on TV, and the airports, etc… You know what IBM did? They shut down the ENTIRE DEPARTMENT! ALL the us workers, and the US division, was replaced with workers in INDIA!

MANY years ago the issuers had not yet figured out the fraction of a penny cash in value. We used to collect coupons, take them to a grocery store (we had a favorite so maybe not every store would have been so accommodating) and get the full discount value…I.e., 35 cent coupons got you 35 cents. It was very easy to get coupons out of the newspaper, etc and net an easy $5-10 – no questions asked. However, within a year or so the franctional cash value came into being.
