I only shop sales each week. Most all families have certain meals they make on repeat. I made a list of those meals and then a list of all the items required to make those meals. Most all items on the list are shelf stable or can be preserved by freezing. For example… lasagne uses meat, cheese, noodles and sauce, same for spaghetti. All of those ingredients can be bought in bulk when it’s at its lowest price and either kept in the pantry or in the freezer. Cheese freezes beautifully!! I shop for groceries like I shop for my couponing items. I have a stockpile so I never have to pay full price for food items and I always have the ingredients for meals we make on repeat on hand at all times unless it calls for fresh produce, which most all vegetables can be frozen. I’m not a meal planner and because I keep my pantry, fridge and freezer well stocked with all the ingredients needed to make our regular meals, I am able to make a decision on dinner the day of and if something crazy happens and we can’t get to the store, have a job loss or there are empty shelves like we are starting to see more often then I know my family will have food on hand. I stock a years worth of food at all times and we rotate through it. And no I did not buy that much all at once. I slowly stocked up as the items we use went on sale. I love having a food stockpile just like I love having a personal care, household items and paper goods stockpile. I do buy fresh produce as needed each week along with milk and any items we use that are on sale to keep my pantry/freezer full. I also pressure can and buy fresh produce in bulk when it’s on sale to can and put in my pantry. You mentioned potato soup. We love potato soup and make it often. Potatoes are on sale this week for a great price. I will buy up enough to make at least 6-8 pots of potato soup and pressure can them and have them on my shelf ready
for potato soup. It makes my life so much easier!!

Meal planning is definitely something I need to be better at doing.

Lori says:

Meal planning is a great tip, I will make chili and from that the next day we can have chili dogs or chili cheese nachos. I will also make bakes potatoes, for a meal, and make a few extra, from there I make potato soup, and you can use taco fixings to make quesdillas for the next day. I think buying cheese and shredding it yourself is a great way to save money, although the other way is more convenient. Also to save produce, when berries go on sale, I put them on a cookie sheet and freeze and later put them in a freezer bag for use later, and you can also try a Farmers Market too.

Another coupon idea emailing companies some send out coupons once a month.. some send free coupons some send money off.. that’s how I coupon also with the digitals

Meaghan McKinney says:

You can freeze shredded cheese! Just pour whatever amount from the frozen bag you will need for a meal in a bowl to thaw (usually 10-30 ish mins for us). Also, yes, look on the app and build your cart. Easiest way to budget out, and most stores like a kroger, will tell you if one of your items has a coupon that week.

Patti Ney says:

Great video! Thanks for making it!

Red rice makes an excellent ground beef substitute or extender
FYI wanted to make an item with cream cheese. Walmart had a plastic tub of CC for almost $7. Needless to say we did not make that item. 🤣🤣

Kara says:

The area of the country where you live makes such a huge difference too (I live in an expensive area). But all these ideas work no matter, you just adjust for your reality. Meal planning is crucial and using what you already have to do so. And I do the coordination of ingredients too. If I make pico for tacos I will then use it to also make a pico de gallo chicken or loaded nachos with the left overs. You’re ideas and even meals and such mentioned are exactly what I do. I still spend more than I would like but couponing I’m hoping will help me as I build up my stock etc. lunch is a tough one for me too. I homeschool so we’re home a ton so throughout the year lunch is basically scrounging leftovers and easy pbj etc as cheap as possible.

My 16 year old eats more then my boyfriend and I combined…lol..but I'm grateful he is healthy and growing.
Meal planning was a huge game changer for me. Huge!
Chicken noodle soup is huge in my house during winter and I make enough to freeze a large portion for nights where we are busy. We also recently starting buying a whole cow with my MIL and SIL and we put it in a deep freezer, it is a huge money saver and we qre supporting local farmers.
I write my list in the order of the store layout, it helps me stay on task and not forget things. My first stop is always ALDI then Walmart and Publix. I hate going to so many stores but doing this has saved me a ton of money.
I always buy meat in bulk, once you start doing it it becomes easy. I find it much easier to have everything on hand and only have to shop for produce on a weekly basis.
IBotta and Fetch is where I get all my Christmas money from.
