Toner and ink cartridges have a second life at Cartridge World in Maple Grove. Ninety percent of the cartridges are reused.

“Anything in your home or office, we can provide a cartridge for it that is recycled, remanufactured and in doing that save people 30 to 40 percent off buying a new one,” says Chris Petersen, vice president and one of the owners of the Maple Grove location. “First, you save money and second, you save waste going into landfills.”

If you’ve never recycled and reused an ink cartridge, you simply bring your old one in and pick up a new one. The location has also expanded to helping repair printers for customers as a part of their reduce and reuse mantra.

This year, you can get $5 off a $25 purchase at Cartridge World by using a coupon in Hennepin County’s Choose to Reuse Coupon booklet.

“Reducing and reusing is the best way to manage that waste,” said Angie Timmons, environmental educator at Hennepin County. “We want people to recycle, but the best way to manage is to reduce in the first place and look for reuse opportunities.”

Hennepin County strategically releases the books for the busy back-to-school shopping season in hopes consumers can work some new, environmentally friendly retailers into their shopping mix. Last year residents redeemed more than 30,000 coupons.

“There’s lots of different reasons why someone might choose to reuse, so use these coupons are a place to start,” says Timmons.

You can pick the booklets up at Hennepin County libraries and service centers, Three Rivers Park District locations, or any of the more than 40 retailers listed in the booklet. You can also forgo the booklet and download the Chinook Book app for free. The coupons will then immediately come to your smartphone.
