Soup from a can? Of course. Tuna from a can? Why not? Chicken from a can? As long as it’s not an entire chicken, bring it on. Well, depending on how far back you go, a whole chicken in a can wouldn’t have been that strange.

While there are only a handful of canned foods that might make sense to most consumers today, there was a time when you’d see a lot of other meals in a can that aren’t as common now. You can still find some of them in stores, though others have faded into obscurity. Here are some of the once-popular canned foods that no one eats anymore.

Sally Down says:

I remember eating all of these foods as a kid in the 60's – early 80's in Southern California. We used to get the B&M brown bread (and their baked beans) as a treat, but I haven't seen either of them in a store here for many years – if I saw them, I'd buy them immediately. As for canned tamales, they're still in the supermarket, (and they're still dreadful,) but tamales are easy to make, especially if you buy prepared masa from the store. As for tamale vendors, they are back! Lately, the barrios are full of people (mostly illegal immigrants) selling fresh tamales and elote from little push-carts, and they're often seen selling in the parking lots of supermarkets in the suburbs. Not sure about health risks, but there are a lot of them out there. The street food I really miss are the home-made bean pies and sweet potato pies that Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam followers used to sell on the street corners. I wasn't a big fan of their religion, but their bean pies were delicious.

ambercrombie789 says:

Hormel canned tamales are vile. // Frozen ones Texas Tamale Co. in Houston are almost as good as the ones street vendors sell.

Steven Jerkins says:

Lol I have a lot ofthose canned items in the pantry except the canned burger. Canned burgers are awful.
Canned whole chicken with forever herbs and veggies is chicken stew fur the hunt camp.
B&M brown bread is great for a camp bteakfast.
I remember begging my mom to get spaghettios. I couldn't finish the plate. It was like there was corn syrup in the sauce. Never had it again. I still buy Manwich on occasion.
It has gotten hard to find canned pork brains any more. Brains and eggs with ham and redeye gravy was my grandfather's idea of a Sunday brunch.
Green peanuts will be in season soon. Looking g forward to some fresh boiled peanuts. I boil them with some pickling spice and have been known to do a brisket along with the peanuts.
Did you ever eat canned fried onions for a snack?
Cougar gold cheese is fairly good but for the higher price could be more shelf stable.

Jim Walsh says:

What tosh! Macaroni cheese is a 13th century itialian dish, not US american at all! And no, we British shun fast food, it is the US that uses it. I would also say, it is vomiy making to see someone rubbing spive and oil into a chicken who, not only has long finger nails but is also wearing rings and jewellery. That is just a 1000% health hazard.

Farmer Jer says:

I miss my tin of chocolate pudding….
Heck I miss every food from my childhood. Profit over quality, that and takeovers wiped out all my childhood favorites .

What ever happened to Welsh Rarebit in the can?

CHEFPHIL48 says:

New England brown bread was originally a home recipe where the dough was boiled in an empty coffee can. B & M just made it commercially available. Goes great with a Bean-hole-bean supper, sort of a north Maine woods version of a clambake.

thatgirlwiththegreenjacket says:

I live in Houston. You don't need to visit a restaurant or store for tamales. Walk a few feet and you'll find someone selling them. Won't be a cart. Just some guy selling packs of a dozen out of a bag or his car. 2-3 choices of filling. His abuela made them. They walk around or you can find them at a farmers market or outside bars.

Joncl says:

Tinned bread???? 😱

Spencer says:
