Thanks Honey for sponsoring! | After countless boy-meets-girl romances, Hollywood has recently turned its attention to a new kind of love story: the female friendship. The idea that a platonic girlfriend can be your soulmate has become mainstream in shows like Insecure, Broad City, and Dead to Me, and in movies such as Girls Trip and Booksmart, and the increasing seriousness devoted to this subject represents a remarkable cultural shift. Here’s our Take on how the female friendship has become one of the most complex, essential, and revolutionary relationships onscreen today. If you like this video, subscribe to our channel or support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/thetake

Nenna Aco says:

I wish I had a friend. Tired of having no one to send me memes to. 🙁

Sara Jung says:

19:07 BTS's song Spring Day portrays this feeling beautifully

Zara Ammar says:

I’m sending this video to my best friend. Gotta show her some love 💕

PhilosopherWR says:

As a lesbian, this video essay made me feel lucky to have my straight female friends. By that I mean that my friends didn't believe the negative portrayals of straight/gay friendships. For many years lesbians were portrayed as obsessed psychopaths and their friendship as a danger to straight women. Honestly, I think a lot of those movie scripts were written by straight men who were insecure about female friendships as rivals.

I have never longed for any of my straight friends in a romantic or sexual way. We're just people, we just want friends that we can relate to. It never occurred to me to think of them that way. And if they ever I wondered if I did they never let on.

Caroll says:

I loooved this! Y’all are missing girlfriends tho! It is révolutionary!

Shilloh Ruth says:

Im surprised golden girls was not mentioned. Unless im wrong.

jaliya kajakeh says:

This made me realize that I been neglecting my best friend lately. I was struggling with my grades and I needed to focus but that's not an excuse to forget someone whose so important in your life. I feel really bad, but maybe she´s been feeling like I don´t love her anymore all this time.

Nora Sprooten says:

i feel so bad for girls who say “i dont like girls, theyre too much drama, id rather have guyfriends” like yes!! Female friendships are intense but that makes it BETTER. while you are out watching sports with your guyfriends or whatever i will be with the girlies sharing trauma ❤️

Anna Gergely says:

I'm so glad the this is talked about. I love my female friends with all my fucking heart, there are no words to express how much.
Female rivalry is misogynist propaganda. I almost want my friends to be happy more then i want my self to be happy. We are comrades in arms against patriarchy.

Donna Gran de Valeur says:

I wonder how much of this shift I due to more Women writers.

PD Zombie says:

My favorite friendship break up story: The Social Network. My favorite female friendships on tv: Daria and Jane, and Tuca & Bertie…
Too bad you didn't include Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy from the latest adult animated show, their relationship is the core of the series…
Thanx, Girls, great as usual!!!

Aleisa Mora says:

I would be interested in seeing one of these with male friendships and how they’ve evolved. I’ve noticed that Workaholics, Magic Mike 2 and Changeland have all normalized non-hypermasculine friendships and o think that’s important to talk about. Also, it’s way more fun to see male friendships just having fun without competing

Irongirltoni says:

Everyone: platonic friends in TV and movies
Me: lesbians

Suhanna De Silva says:

Nooooo I’m only on the first season of Insecure, I’m sad to see this is where Issa and Molly’s relationship goes 😪

Little Oreo says:

THIS video. Right there is why I adore female friendship even though I'm so sick and tired of tropes of boy-meets-girl romances and girls being catty or jealous. It's so beautiful yet complicated.

Roshni Saxena says:

Thank you! I love this video, you all are amazing.

That Lady says:

The ending of Broad City had me in tears,

Shinny Pinneaple says:

Friendship between women is the most pure and powerful bond you can have. It took me reaching adulthood to realise that.

Joanne Carr says:

I stan a female friendship. Female friendship is worshipped and holy in this house.

Madame Problèmes says:

I ADORE this style OMG
I spend my whole quarantine time watching only this style 😂

matheus las casas says:

Dude… Booksmart is so underrated…

_ says:

It's interesting how Natalie Alyn Lind has essentially portrayed one character in every major role she's played and that character embodies some of the tropes that stood out in this analysis. She's always the stunningly beautiful girl who doesn't really have any meaningful female friendships and whose storylines revolve almost entirely around male characters. This is even more obvious in Gotham where her character has absolutely no purpose other than to engage in a vicious competition with another girl over a boy. And her storylines are often heavily focused on one singular heterosexual romance.

Molly List says:

yup just some gal pals

DriftFromReality - says:

Everyone just remember that if you can’t be best friends with your romantic partner, then it won’t last. Romance isn’t some magical, fixer-upper that will make your life worth living. It’s special, and valuable but no more than a platonic best friend relationship.
