On November 14th 2017, Zimbabwe military troops drove tanks into the capital city, Harare. They patrolled the streets, blocked access to government buildings, and took over the state television station to insist….
This is not a military takeover of government.
Once praised as a war hero, Robert Mugabe helped Zimbabwe win independence from Great Britain in 1980. He became president under Zimbabwe’s new constitution with the support of the people.
But soon, he digressed into a repressive dictator.
He secured his power through aggression and threats, there have been reports of state-sponsored torture and killings.
And even though Zimbabwe is technically a democracy, there’s evidence Mugabe rigged elections in his favor.
Now that Mugabe is 93 years old, and reportedly in poor health, the fight for political influence is more important than ever.
And it’s caused a split in Mugabe’s own party, the ZANU-PF.
On one side we have the old guard lead by Mugabe’s sacked vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa. Like Mugabe, he fought for Zimbabwe’s independence and has a checkered past that includes human rights abuses against political opponents and ethnic minorities.

UPDATE: On Tuesday, November 21, Robert Mugabe resigned as President of Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe didn't get independence from Britain in 1980 it got independence from Rhodesia which itself declared independence from Britain

A controversial point, many see the previous (Rhodesia) government as having provided better standards but consider this. The majority (7million) black People couldn't vote for President, and thought living standards were higher they were only higher for the minority (380 thousand white Rhodesians) while the majority had it worse than they do today. So… In short, from a white Zimbabwean's perspective, it truly has become many times worse living here, while simultaneously, from a Black Zimbabwean's perspective it is objectively very much better if not as good as the white Rhodesians had it yet still far better than Africans did pre-independence.
Another consideration, using demographics… It's quite difficult to transform a to b
a) a system that was built to cater (very abundantly) to about 380k people and up to around 800k of their direct employees, using abundant resources produced by about 7mil people working as captive labor (when leaving your job in a farm for example would mean you can't afford the "hut tax", but staying means 60% of your income goes to tax an upkeep with 40% leftover).
Moving from that to…
b) a system where all those same taxes, same power plants, same dams etc. (and taxes were even lowered post independence) now have to cater for not just 380k people but 7mil at independence, and 16 mil today.
Statistically speaking the (good) infrastructure, (from the number of turbines built into Kariba, to the number of large highways) was well designed*, *yet was designed for a minority to be very well catered for while the black majority were informally catered for by whoever's farm, school grounds or other labor they worked on. Without government help. The Rhodesian government didn't have the same statistical challenge.
Funny how the US promised to lift sanctions after regime change in 2008, regime change happens and how does the US respond? Just add new sanctions to the new regime.
I am from South Africa and have many relatives from Zimbabwe. Trust me when I say this, the situation is way better than that of Mugabe's reign!

Just a quick note: although it is technically correct to say that they gained independence from great britain in 1980, that's just a technicality, as they were only briefly reinstated under British rule while transitioning from the white minority rule but independent state of Rhodesia to the black majority rule state of Zimbabwe

Robert Mugabe didn't fight a war of independence against Britain but against the white supremacist minority rule!!!
Here in India, the newspapers completely omitted the military action part.
It stated that there was widespread public anger over Robert Mugabe planning to make his wife Grace as the next president instead of Mnangagwa, so he was forced to resign & expelled from his own party the ZANU-PF under public pressure & Mnangagwa took over power with popular support. I also remember the newspaper bearing a photo of an anti-Grace demonstration with a placard where it was written in English – 'Leadership is not transmitted sexually'.
