Top 10 eBay Buying Tips – How to Grab a Bargain – eBay Advice Part 3

10 Keywords – The eBay search is not clever like Google’s and eBay sellers aren’t always good at spelling. When looking for an item try different search terms that could be related to the item you’re after, and even try incorrect spellings. The harder it is to find the more likely it is you’ll get a good price.

9 Following a search – When you search for an item on eBay, you have an option to follow a search. eBay will email you when new items appear in that search, allowing you to get that rare item before anyone else gets the chance.

8 eBay offers – Not everyone knows about eBay best offers. Look out for the little Buy it now or best offer symbol, which gives you three chances to see if you can convince a seller to accept a lower price. They can send back three counter offers in response, and usually you can get a discount this way. Many sellers feel insulted by very low offers, so be sure to to offer a fair price.

7 Message a seller – Even if you miss out on an offer, or if an item doesn’t have a best offer feature, you can message a sellers and ask them if they’d lower the item to a certain price. Be sure to stay with within eBay rules and don’t try to deal outside of eBay. I’ve messaged sellers with some success and negotiated a discount.

6 Vouchers – Keep your eye open for eBay vouchers. Occasionally, eBay will send you a 10% off voucher. Also, if you live in the UK, you can link your Nectar card to your eBay which means you can earn and spend nectar point on eBay.

5 Is it good value? I often check Amazon as well as eBay when looking for a good price. I’ll also look at the completed listings on eBay to make sure I’m not paying far too much for an item – it’s too easy to pay too much if you’re only checking active listings on eBay.

4 eBay app – Did you know that you can bid, buy and sell on the go using the eBay app for Android and iPhone? I use this app all the time if I’m not going to be at home when an item ends.

3 International listings – You can change which countries you’re searching in. Take into account import duty and hidden charges, but you could grab yourself a bargain. If you live in Europe there are no charges to buy from other european countries.

2 Buy It Nows – Many people get carried away with eBay auctions, often paying more than the item would cost in a high street shop. In my experience, I’ve found that Buy It Nows can actually have the cheapest prices, so I’ll sort by price and only show buy it nows to find the best price.

1 Auctions – If you must buy by auction, bid in the last 1 to 10 seconds. I usually bid in the last 5 seconds. Of course, your internet connection might screw up and you’ll lose your item, or you might not bid high enough, but as well as making sure you’re the last bidder, this helps you to only bid what you’re actually willing to pay rather than what you’re willing to pay to outbid your competition. Also, be sure to add items to your watch list – this gives you notifications when the item is close to ending and makes it easier to keep an eye on the price of the item.

The problem with "best offer" is I've seen it used by unscrupulous sellers to make their items stand out, with no intention of actually accepting an offer. In one case, after having two reasonable offers auto-rejected instantly (you can set it to reject offers below a certain amount automatically), I tried another offer one penny less than the buy it now price. It, too, was auto-rejected, meaning he wouldn't take any offer less than the buy it now price. He just wanted the "best offer" tag. When I messaged him about it, he completely ignored me.

@5:11 Just use a sniper service for something like that. 5 servers are better than one computer.

I never really took advantage of the "Best Offer" until very recently, when I was looking at an AMT/Erl U.S.S. Defiant from Deep Space Nine. The seller's "Buy Now" was $65 (around £51), I offered $44 (around £33). They accepted it within five minutes. A pretty sweet deal on a model kit that is like fairy dust. I've seen it go for as high as £90-250 before shipping/tax etc. Although I'm a bit anxious at the moment, as it's being shipped as part of GSP…and hearing of horror stories with that…
