The new bar codes are an inconvenience when they don’t work at stores with policies in force that say they won’t take coupons that don’t scan. Leaving you standing at the register feeling as if you’ve just been caught shoplifting!! I understand the need for change however when 2 of the major grocery stores in Maryland don’t recognize the new bar codes, then these manufacturers need to slow it down or bring them to speed. I have no problem leaving Kellogg’s or any other product in the store vs. Using a coupon that does work.

The two line barcode is the GS1 DataBar (RSS) Expanded Stacked. It's superior to the older UPC-A or the EAN type of barcode because it allows for encoding additional types of data. Barcodes on coupons are supposed to move to the new format, but considering some stores can't yet read them, coupon printers usually place both barcodes on the coupon. Currently (end of '14) thats the standard. Eventually, all point-of-sale registers will be able to read GS1 and coupons will need only that one barcode, But, yes, some coupons are already using only the one, GS1 Stacked.

That totally stinks. If it happens to my Safeway I'll be so upset. Thats really the only place I shop!

no truer words!!

That if it scans thing is soo stupid! If theyd just read and match the words to the products *bam* push it on through..store management trusts cashiers with all this money that gets exchanged in their drawers..but not enough to just read coupons..*smh*

@hot1momma it has gone both ways, sometimes they take them sometimes they won't. Honestly when I am printing them from my computer, using my ink, I feel that the manufacturers are wasting my time and money if their coupons don't work. I understand, not arguing the reason, but there just has to be some other more improved way.

hot1momma says:

i can see them not wanting to take them if the are internet printed coupons, but the ones that are clipped from the the inserts they should push thoughs
through.

@CouponPHD All my coupons scanned just fine. Maybe it was the store I was at it is one of the newer ones. They probably more up to date.

CouponPHD says:

@HqHoney girl I am done. My lame Safeway couldn't scan the Ocean Spray coupons tonight but my other gf said she didn't have a problem at hers. So some Safeways have the new technology while others are in the dark ages.

HqHoney says:

the Kelloggs coupons do not scan….luckily I go to the Giant in Clinton and they will force it.
